The Miniature Horse is an incredible animal. It is an actual breed of horse and is not a pony. Many people
have come to love and adore these amazing horses.
The Miniature Horse can come in a variety of colors. They can come in any color that a full sized horse
would be. The most popular color is pinto. A pinto is any color and white. They can also be one solid
color. They can be anywhere from white to black and any variation between. Miniature Horses also have a
variety of characteristics. The two major eye colors are blue and brown however, occasionally they are
green. They try to breed Miniature Horses with small ears, an Arab styled head and long necks. They should
also be small in height with a thick mane and tail. Pinto coloring is usually preferred.
Miniature Horses have excellent dispositions. They make good family pets and are great with kids. Miniature
Horses are more like dogs in personality than horses. They are very sweet and loving. They like people and
attention. They are intelligent and can be taught tricks. They are actually training Miniature Horses to be
seeing eye animals.
Miniature Horses were originally bred down from full sized horses to work in the coalmines. They were
trained to pull the ore carts. Miniature Horses originated from Europe. Today, the Miniature Horse performs
in many different ways. One of them is jumping. In a jumping class, you run along your horse as they soar
over the jumps. Although they can only hold sixty-five pounds on their backs, they can pull three times their
weight. Miniature Horses are trained to pull carts. These carts are just smaller versions of the carts regular
size horses pull. Miniature Horses can pull up to one thousand pounds. Miniature Horses can also show in
obstacle. An obstacle course consists of many different tasks the horse must perform. Some of these tasks
include sidestepping, backing up, standing still, going over bridges, walking through water and walking in
certain patterns. The Miniature Horse is a versatile pet. They can be taken to convalescent homes to minister
to the elderly or just be a family pet. Because of their popularity, many people have farms and breed their
Miniature Horses.
There are several things you must do to ensure a healthy horse. First, Miniature Horses need vaccinations just
like a full size horse or dog. They need their hooves trimmed every six weeks. A common health problem
with Miniature Horses is colic. There are three different types of colic: sand, hair and stone. Miniature
Horses have the same size intestines as full size horses. These long intestines are squished into their small
body. When Miniature Horses swallow something they shouldn’t, they cannot regurgitate it. This causes
stomach discomfort or colic. If they can’t dislodge the blockage by themselves they must have surgery or be
put to sleep. To prevent colic, the Miniature Horse should be fed psyllium. Psyllium helps keep things
moving through their intestinal tract. Another common problem is founder. Founder is caused by over eating.
Miniature Horses do not have a sense that tells them when to stop eating. Too much food can cause major
health problems. Dwarfism is another health problem prone to Miniature Horses. Foals born with dwarfism
are very small and not proportioned. They usually have intestinal problems and their life expectancy is
shortened.
The Miniature Horses diet consists of mostly hay, pellets and psyllium. The hay and pellets are both made of
half alfalfa and half bermuda grass. They are also given psyllium everyday to prevent colic. There are many
supplements you can feed your horse to enhance their coat and color. Most people let their Miniature Horses
graze on grass once in awhile to increase the roughage in their diets and aid against colic.
In conclusion, Miniature Horses are an actual breed of horse. They are loyal, hardworking animals. They are
not just show horses but loving pets and wonderful companions.
